The answer may be a village someone has to find on a map. It may be Athens or Thessaloniki, an island or more than one place. It may lead quickly to names, dates and a story the family has told for years. Or it may reveal how much remains to be asked.
That last possibility is worth making room for. Heritage does not always arrive as a complete account. One generation knows the departure; another knows the first job; someone else remembers the apartment above the shop. The family story is distributed among the people who carry it.
For grandchildren, the distance can make the questions different. What did your grandparents miss? Who helped them when they arrived? What made them laugh in the early years? A specific question can open a door that a general request to talk about the past leaves closed.
