Xylouris Wall Art
I grew up in a home with two immigrant parents from the Greek island of Crete. The culture and traditions from this unique place were prevalent in my upbringing, especially the music. I’m old enough to remember my father’s 8-track tape collection which included various Greek singers from the mid-century era— especially Nikos Xylouris.
Nikos Xylouris was born in Anogeia, a rugged mountain region in central Crete, and penned soulful songs that expressed the indomitable spirit of his island’s people. As a child he witnessed his village being overrun and eventually burned to the ground by Nazi German invaders and emerged as a musical artist in the 1970s, during the student uprisings against the military dictatorship at Athens Polytechnic. These anti-fascist themes are prevalent in his music and Xylouris and his music remain as a universal symbol of opposition to oppression.
I’m proud to offer five copies of this contemporary Giclée print on layers of film sprayed with metallic pearl paints to give a shimmering effect when introduced to light by UK-born Greek artist Andy Millis.
An autodidactic artist, Millis began his journey in art and design in the late 80s designing commercial décor and other media. Having an interest in nature he tends to highlight or complement the colors, lights and shading that can be seen in the natural world and tends to use lines he takes from human body form. He likes to mix his work with urban elements such as street art, concrete, glass and metal and also create works on various media such as glass, plexiglass, wood, paper and canvas.
